3:8 Instruct the priests carrying the ark of the covenant, ‘When you reach the bank of the Jordan River, ¹  wade into the water.’” ² 

Yosua 4:5

4:5 Joshua told them, “Go in front of the ark of the Lord your God to the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to put a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the Israelite tribes.

Yosua 4:9

4:9 Joshua also set up twelve stones ³  in the middle of the Jordan in the very place where the priests carrying the ark of the covenant stood. They remain there to this very day.

Yosua 6:4

6:4 Have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns ⁴  in front of the ark. On the seventh day march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the horns.

Yosua 7:6

7:6 Joshua tore his clothes; ⁵  he and the leaders ⁶  of Israel lay face down on the ground before the ark of the Lord until evening ⁷  and threw dirt on their heads. ⁸ 

[3:8]  ¹ tn Heb “the edge of the waters of the Jordan.” The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied for clarity.

[3:8]  ² tn Heb “stand in the Jordan.” Here the repetition of the word “Jordan” would be redundant according to contemporary English style, so it was not included in the translation.

[4:9]  ³ tn Here “also” has been supplied in the translation to make it clear (as indicated by v. 20) that these are not the same stones the men took from the river bed.

[6:4]  ⁴ tn Heb “rams’ horns, trumpets.”

[7:6]  ⁵ sn Tearing one’s clothes was an outward expression of extreme sorrow (see Gen 37:34; 44:13).

[7:6]  ⁶ tn Or “elders.”

[7:6]  ⁷ tn Heb “and fell on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel.”

[7:6]  ⁸ sn Throwing dirt on one’s head was an outward expression of extreme sorrow (see Lam 2:10; Ezek 27:30).
